Smart IoT Solutions: Combating Climate Change and Reducing Environmental Impact

Our planet is on the brink of surpassing a crucial temperature limit, as scientists predict that global temperatures are likely to breach the 1.5°C threshold in the next few years. The chances of crossing this threshold have risen to 66% due to human-induced emissions between now and 2027. While the breach may likely only be temporary, it signifies a worrying acceleration of warming and a failure to slow down climate change.

The 1.5°C figure holds significant importance in global climate change negotiations. Under the 2015 Paris agreement, countries committed to making efforts to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°C in relation to pre-industrial levels. If this limit is exceeded consistently over a decade or two, the consequences will be extreme, including prolonged heatwaves, intensified storms, and increased wildfires.

However, passing the 1.5°C threshold in the upcoming years does not necessarily mean that the Paris Agreement limit has been broken. Scientists emphasise that there is still time to mitigate global warming by implementing substantial emission reductions.

In the battle against climate change, North’s smart integrated technology solutions, play a crucial role in reducing carbon footprint and minimising environmental impact. Our innovative technologies and solutions are actively contributing to the fight against climate change.

North's smart IoT solutions encompass various areas, including intelligent lighting, waste management, and air quality monitoring. By integrating IoT devices and advanced analytics, North enables intelligent monitoring, optimisation, and control of resources and processes. This results in reduced energy consumption, optimised operational efficiency, and minimised carbon footprint, helping organisations to reach their net zero targets.

North’s intelligent lighting, significantly increase energy efficiency and sustainability. By leveraging IoT connectivity and sensor technologies, the smart lighting solutions allow for remote monitoring, management and control of street lighting, providing valuable insights that lead to a reduced carbon footprint, while enhancing the service.

An example of an intelligent lighting contract that North worked on is with Aberdeen City Council. The council aimed to improve city life, achieve sustainability, and reduce carbon emissions through innovative IoT technology. North provided them with a CMS-based Intelligent Lighting solution and a city-wide IoT network, installing a state-of-the-art IoT solution to remotely manage and monitor over 37,000 street lighting units. The intelligent lighting system not only enhanced lighting provision but also contributed to creating a greener and safer city for Aberdeen's residents. The project aligned with Aberdeen City Council's Net Zero Aberdeen Route Map, helping them achieve their net-zero targets by improving energy efficiency and lowering carbon emissions. The success of this project was acknowledged nationally, as it won the Sustainable Customer Project of the Year category at the CRN Tech Impact Awards.

North also offers smart waste management systems, which optimise waste collection routes, reduce collection frequency, and minimise unnecessary emissions. This leads to improved resource allocation, reduced carbon footprint and environmental impact, and cost savings for waste management operations.

Air quality monitoring plays a vital role in safeguarding public health and the environment. By deploying sensor networks and real-time data analytics, air quality solutions enable the continuous monitoring of air quality parameters. This empowers cities and communities to identify pollution sources, implement targeted interventions, and improve air quality for residents.

As our world faces the imminent risk of exceeding the 1.5°C temperature limit, it is imperative to embrace innovative solutions that combat climate change. North's smart technologies offer a promising pathway towards a sustainable future. By harnessing the power of smart technologies, North empowers businesses and communities to reduce their carbon footprint and create a more sustainable world.
