Creating a Smarter Connected Healthcare Campus

Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) is a state-of-the-art healthcare facility offering maternity, children’s and inpatient services to the communities of Sandwell and West Birmingham. MMUH aims to be an example of a best-in-class healthcare facility, bringing together expertise to establish a central hub for acute and emergency care. The new hospital will provide emergency, maternity, children’s, and adult acute inpatient services for a population of half a million.

Working with Balfour Beatty and Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust, North designed, delivered and now supports a campus-wide network infrastructure for the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), creating the foundation for this smart hospital.

MMUH was designed to support operational efficiency and innovation and to improve the patient experience. This required a resilient network and cabling infrastructure capable of supporting both essential building management systems and smart technology solutions, such as smart lighting, CCTV, access control, nurse call systems and AGVs.

Reliable campus-wide connectivity was crucial to the hospital’s operations, as was ensuring systems are accessible and data can be securely shared, especially during urgent assessments. North’s approach met the stringent requirements of MMUH, supporting its journey towards becoming a fully smart hospital.

North played a key role in delivering a network tailored to the hospital's operational requirements, ensuring seamless access to a site-wide network and wireless LAN (WLAN) for both staff and patients. The high-speed network enables rapid access to critical NHS applications and systems, enhancing operational efficiency, accelerating diagnosis, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.

As the most recently opened acute care facility in the region, secure and scalable network infrastructure was critical to provide robust communications and connectivity. The future-proof solution designed by North now supports seamless scalability and the integration of innovative IoT technologies, that can be used to support future enhancements and to improve the patient experience.
