Safer places start with smarter surveillance

public space cctv delivered to Hammersmith & Fulham Council

Hammersmith & Fulham Council have partnered with North, over a 5-year partnership, to modernise its Public Space CCTV estate. The council faced significant challenges, including ageing infrastructure, rising antisocial behaviour, increasing budget pressures, and the need to futureproof outdated systems.  Determined to strengthen its community safety offer, the council committed to a £4.5 million transformation.

North delivered a complete end-to-end upgrade, including a new state-of-the-art Control Centre and videowall, the replacement of end-of-life cameras and systems, a full network refresh, and advanced multi-sensor CCTV technology.

Collaborative surveillance is delivering safer public spaces, not just for one London borough but multiple as Hammersmith & Fulham’s Control Centre supports neighbouring boroughs Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. Not only are the three boroughs working together to make London a safer place, but the shared services model allows for public funds to be spent more effectively.

Hammersmith & Fulham now has the densest CCTV network per head of population in the UK, directly supporting police operations, the borough’s Law Enforcement Team, and contributing to a measurable reduction in crime rates.

Real-time video alerts, multi-sensor cameras, and integrated body-worn cameras has become proven tools for reducing crime for the Council. Together with North, Hammersmith & Fulham has created one of the UK’s most advanced CCTV networks – helping H&F respond quicker to public safety threats, reduce and deter crime, and make public spaces safer.

“We’ve worked together to explore upgrades to technology and shared service partnerships with neighbouring boroughs, including Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster. Not only does this approach allow us greater ability to cost-effectively invest in our own CCTV network, it also helps the Met Police respond to crime and anti-social behaviour reports that occur in the wider west London area. That has enabled us to improve safety and ensure better outcomes for residents.”
