Water Fest brings together local people, performers, businesses, and community groups to celebrate Reading’s waterways, but it’s about more than a great day out. It’s a moment to reflect on the importance of sustainable water in our society, and how we can protect it for future generations. 

Why water conservation matters more than ever 

Water is one of our most essential resources. It keeps our homes running, our green spaces growing, and our businesses moving. But the UK is facing increasing pressure on its water systems. Population growth, urban development, and climate change are putting a serious strain on supply. According to the Environment Agency, parts of England could run short of water within 25 years without urgent action, a timescale that feels all the more pressing given the dry conditions much of the country has experienced this spring. 

Events like Water Fest raise awareness of this challenge, whilst also celebrating the role water plays in our heritage, our health, and our happiness. From the canals that powered the industrial revolution to the rivers we paddleboard on and walk beside today, water has always been central to our way of life. It still is.
