ESG
We’re firmly committed to embracing sustainability across every area of our business, the communities we work in and the wider world.
Much of our work at North is about helping our clients create smarter places. Often that is about using new technologies to optimise systems, reduce energy use, and manage resources more effectively. But we work on our own impact as well, whether it’s environmental, social or governance.
We have pledged to meet Net Zero by 2040 and take our responsibilities in environmental stewardship seriously. We continually work on our energy efficiency, waste management, supply chain management, partnerships, measurements, accreditations, voluntary work and apprenticeships.
Reducing emissions
We are working hard to reduce our emissions, through effective energy, waste and supply chain activities, as well as meeting the key accreditations that underpin our progress.
Emissions and energy efficiency
We’re working to reduce our emissions through effective energy, waste and supply chain activities and to transition to a more sustainable fleet. The adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles and the implementation of sustainable transport practices will support us in our commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2040.
Waste management
Our waste management strategy commits us to the principles of the circular economy, and we work proactively with partners to reduce single-use materials, promote recycling, and explore opportunities for repurposing waste materials.
Sustainable supply chain
A sustainable supply chain is a priority for North. We evaluate our supply chain annually to ensure alignment with our standards, and we work with them to create environmental improvements and build positive social value in the delivery of projects.
Training and education
We think bigger as we train and develop our colleagues and encourage sustainable thinking at every level. Improved resource management, waste reduction and energy efficiency are priorities for North, as much as for our customers. Progress in these key areas is essential to achieving our long-term goals.
Checked and validated
We’re committed to ensuring that our progress is regularly checked and validated by independent external adjudicators.
Through the Carbon Disclosure Project, we annually report on our carbon emissions, climate-related risks and opportunities, and our strategies for managing and reducing our environmental impact. This comprehensive reporting allows stakeholders to assess our performance and progress over time.

Net Zero by 2040
The UK Government’s Net Zero target is 2050 and 2045 in Scotland. However, North is committed to achieving Net Zero well ahead of those timetables, by 2040.
We understand the importance of driving down emissions to mitigate our impact on the planet, and the responsibilities we have as a growing organisation with a global footprint. We also believe that working towards Net Zero supports our long-term success and sustainability as a business.
Our energy and carbon emissions are reported annually in line with Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Regulation (SECR) requirements. Our Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our strategy and targets for achieving net-zero emissions..

Putting people first
We are passionate about our people and about providing them with an environment and the opportunity to develop and grow.
We put our people first, we listen and work to deliver continuous improvements across our business, measuring our performance and using feedback as an opportunity to adapt and improve as we learn.
Diversity, equality and inclusion
We’re committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. This creates a positive environment for all North colleagues, and drives innovation, resilience and sustainability.
Measurement is a key part of this commitment. We collect data covering many aspects of diversity, including gender, ethnicity and age. By doing so, we gain valuable insights into the composition of our workforce, allowing us to identify areas for improvement and track progress over time.
Delivering a positive social impact We are committed to supporting the communities that we work in. We believe that by giving back to our communities, we can collectively make a significant difference, and we do so through volunteer initiatives, campaigns and apprenticeships.
Our Volunteering Programme empowers our colleagues to create a positive impact on the causes they care about individually, or as teams. From volunteering with our charity partner, The Trussell Trust, to cleaning up canals in Edinburgh, to wildlife conservation in Southampton, we are proud that our colleagues choose to support the communities they live and work in.
Apprenticeship Programme
Our apprenticeship programme invests in the next generation by fostering skill development to bridge the gap between education and industry. It brings young people the opportunity to kickstart their careers and gain hands-on experience in the dynamic world of technology.
Our apprentices are actively involved in projects that make a positive impact on our clients and communities. Their roles include safety and security, fire emergency and security, and network cabling apprenticeships. Find out more about our apprentices here.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
We are aligned to three key United Nations SDGs:
We support the importance of prioritising the wellbeing and mental health of our employees and fostering a positive and supportive work environment. We achieve this through our wellbeing strategy, wellbeing group, buddying scheme for new starters, trained mental health first-aiders, and Walk and Talk scheme.
We want to play our part in making cities and other human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. And we achieve this through our Internet of Things solutions; our safety and security solutions enhancing city resilience; and our network and connectivity solutions for digital inclusion.
We wholeheartedly embrace Goal 13, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. As a responsible, forward-thinking company, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and fostering environmental awareness both within our organisation and among our stakeholders. We achieve this through our Carbon Reduction Plan, environmental awareness training, carbon literacy training, our ESG committee, and our sustainability champions.
